Wisconsin Number One in Making Turkey Calls

Wisconsin has long been known as a national leader in the production of cheese, but now the state has earned a new title.

Home of the custom turkey call.

The wooden box-like instruments are sound-makers that fool male turkeys known as toms into coming into a hunter's sights.

As proof of the state's prowess at such tomfoolery, a national call-making competition in Nashville last month saw Wisconsin makers earn 30 awards in the decorative call competition.

The next closest states were New York with 11 and Tennesse and West Virginia with nine each.

Chris Karinja is a New Jersey regional director for the National Wild Turkey Federation.

He says it's now an indisputable fact.

Wisconsin is a mecca for call makers.
