Those sirens you may have heard blaring around 1:40 Thursday afternoon gives local police and rescue workers peace of mind in case of a storm warning this spring and summer; knowing that a community wide warning system is in working order.
In Eau Claire County, around two-dozen sirens were activated, and local students took part in tornado drills.
Officials say when the sirens are activated during severe weather, turn on the TV or radio for weather updates; Do not call 911 unless you have an emergency.
"If a lot of people call, we not only have to field those calls we also have to deal with whatever havoc the storm is wrecking," said Communication Center Director Pam McInnis.
"Then in addition to that, there's the everyday things that happen."
All of the sirens in Eau Claire County worked properly during this afternoon's drill.
