Zimmerman Trial Centers On Dog Hair Evidence

The murder retrial of a former Augusta police officer is focused on dog hair.

A fourth scientist testified Thursday that the hair found on the murder victim's undergarment could have come from Evan Zimmerman's dog. But the hair expert says the analysis cannot pinpoint a specific dog, only a particular breed.

Evan Zimmerman is being retried in Dodge County Circuit Court because of the case's notoriety in northwestern Wisconsin.

He was convicted in 2001 of strangling his former girlfriend, Kathleen Thompson in Eau Claire. Zimmerman's conviction was overturned on his appeal that his initial attorney failed to challenge certain evidence.

Prosecutors say Zimmerman had a dog and that Thompson was in his van right before her body was found along a curb in Eau Claire.
