It seems like it just happened, but get out your pennies, it will cost more for a stamp in May.

The United States Postal Service says it will raise stamp rates by one cent on May 12th. That will make your grand total per letter 42 cents.

You can still buy the Forever stamps online, which locks in a 41 cent rate for life. The postal service hasn't said how long it will sell those stamps, though.

I work for the USPS and I would like for people to check out the comparitive price of mailing a letter here to the rest of the world. It is a far better value here. Someone posted a comment about Fed Ex and UPS delivering letters, that will not happen as they do not have the distribution network to do so. Take a look at their parcel rates, you will find fuel surcharges on them. We are not allowed to add fuel surcharges, yet we still manage to have a lower price. For the person who mentioned receiving poorer service, please contact your local postmaster or union rep and we will correct the problem.

The price of stamps keep going up, while the service quality keeps going down! I know the price of gas is through the roof right now, but come on ... they can tighten their belt like the rest of us. Right now, we only mail things that that we HAVE to mail, otherwise, I do a lot of bill paying online. If more people would utilize this service, we could send a message to the post office to keep rates down, and live like the rest of us, without the expected increases.

This is absolute nonsense to raise stamps by a penny. Either don't raise them at all or raise them at least a nickel. It's not worth a penny to go and buy additional stamps to go with the ones you already have.

The post office needs to do what everyone else has to do....find ways to cut costs or as my employer told us "you need to cut your budget and give up a few things as there are no raises again for the 4th year in a row". The cost of living goes up far faster than the majority of our incomes increase. I myself, make more per hour than I did 10 years ago but I have less money to work with as a result of the increase in all of our expenses ranging from general needs to property taxes. People simply cannot afford more increases in postage. This effects companies that do mailings as they have to raise their cost to the customer which is then passed onto the public resulting to increased costs all across the board for all of us.

This is just bull to keep raising stamps rates so quickly. The problem is that the USPS does not have any competition for first class mail. UPS and Fedex should be allowed to deliver first class mail to create a fair and open market. If the government can compete with Fedex, UPS, and DHL then they should be able to compete with USPS.

I think we don't need another raise in postage. The post office thinks it's bad now with e-mail--raise the rates and no one will use the post offices. The rates are bad enough. Christmas cards were down in 2007. Doesn't this send a message to the post office. Enough is enough. Delivery isn't getting any better. We don't get pay raises like they do. Let's get real.
