During the 2004 school year, the Eau Claire School District spent an estimated $3.7 million on transportation to bus students to and from school.

On a visit to Eau Claire this morning, the state superintendent says more of that money should be spent in classrooms. Elizabeth Burmaster says in the governor's next budget, more than $16 million in additional aid would be available from the state with $120,000 allotted for Eau Claire.

"Local school districts will not have to be making the difficult choices of eliminating programs they know are vital to the success of their children," says Burmaster.

The money would help fund increasing fuel costs, vehicle repair and personnel costs. The amount of aid schools have been receiving has been frozen for the past 15 years.
