Salt, Please?

The brutal winter is taking a toll on Wisconsin's road-salt supplies, prompting state officials to turn to their neighbors to the west.

The state Department of Transportation has contracted with its Minnesota counterpart for 100,000 tons of salt.

Dave Vieth is the director of Wisconsin's Bureau of Highway Operation. He says the challenge is getting all that salt where it needs to be before the next snowstorms roll in.

Vieth says the state started the season with 620,000 tons of salt available -- but it may end up using more than 700,000 tons this winter.

Alvin Geurts is the highway commissioner in Outagamie County. He says the county uses 300 to 600 tons of salt per average storm. With 500 tons left in inventory, he says there's only enough for one or two more storms.

He says if supplies remain low, the county will have to treat state highways as higher priority than county highways.
