The victim of a quarry accident in Racine County has been identified.
Divers recovered the body of the backhoe operator whose machine fell through the ice yesterday at the Park View Sand and Gravel Pit in Rochester, leaving the cab under water in a quarry pond.
Rescuers at first thought the operator might have survived if the cab was watertight. But when workers finally righted the backhoe, the man wasn't in it.
Divers found the body near where the backhoe went under.
The victim, 62-year-old Charles Nemetz of Sussex, was taken to Memorial Hospital of Burlington, where he was pronounced dead.
Racine County Medical Examiner Tom Terry says the cause of death is pending, with an autopsy planned today.
An officer from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration was sent to the scene to investigate.
