Grant to Reduce Drinking at UWEC

By: Salina Heller

The issue of drinking on college campuses isn't new. Officials at U.W.-Eau Claire have been battling the problem for years.
But now, they're hoping a federal grant will turn things around, and reduce the risks related to alcohol.
Surveys show Wisconsin college students, including those at U.W.-Eau Claire drink alcohol at rates far above the national average.
University officials used that fact to get a $300,000 dollar grant from the federal government.
While the university has had other alcohol initiatives, this one will focus mainly on freshman.
Also part of thiscomprehensive program, is a center for alcohol education that will be open when students arrive in the fall.
University officials say all of this is especially nice at a time when extra money from the state is hard to get.
