DOT weighs in on highway buckling

(WEAU) - Those hot temps are causing pavement to buckle again Thursday in Chippewa County.

Another stretch on Highway 29 buckled Thursday afternoon near Boyd. It’s the 5th section of pavement to blow up on Highway 29 in the past week. The DOT says the pavement buckles when slabs expand during hot weather, and push against each other.

The DOT says it saw 17 pavement buckles on major highways on Wednesday alone. It says maintenance crews of four to a dozen workers, can typically repair highway buckling in about 2 or 3 hours.

Chippewa County Highway Commissioner Bruce Stelzner says “usually we see this type of failure in pavement that's 10 years old or older but what we're seeing right now on Highway 29 and Highway 53 is about 6 or 7 year old pavement.”
