One person who got to spend a lot of time with Brett Favre on the field is the guy in charge of his gear.
And he actually started out working the sidelines of Osceola High School, before graduating to a student equipment manager job at UW-La Crosse and making his way to Green Bay.
Cale Kirby is the guy in charge of making sure Favre had everything he needed during practice and on game days. But, he says, Brett had his back, too.
"This describes who he was: During the final game against the New York Giants, we were out on the field and he was warming up, trying to keep warm. He tried the gloves, but he wanted to go to the pouch and I said ‘here I'll give you one.’ I didn’t have gloves on and he says to me 'well I don't want you to be cold out here.' I’m thinking this is the NFC championship game and this is the number one guy out here and he just said that to me. Yup, he’s a good guy.”
If you want to hear more about what it was like working with Favre, Cale has all sorts of stories. You can hear more of them coming up this Sunday at 10:30 p.m. SportsScene Sunday is dedicating the entire half-hour to a special tribute to Brett: A look back at the career of number-four.
