The Barron County Sheriff has released the name of the man involved in a stand-off at a Barron County motel Saturday.
The Sheriff says 46-year-old Douglas W. Moses of Chetek had locked himself inside the Viking Motel in Cameron with a loaded 30-06 rifle and was refusing to leave.
Sheriff Tom Richie says a records check on Moses showed that he was on felony probation for reckless use of a firearm stemming from a Dane County incident. During that incident, Sheriff Richie says Moses was involved in a 20+ hour long stand-off with police. In the Dane County incident, he says Moses did fire rounds from a firearm.
Based on that information, along with Moses' refusal to leave, Sheriff Richie activated the county's Emergency Response Team. Officers from the Cameron, Rice Lake and Chetek Police Departments, along with the Wisconsin State Patol and the Wisconsin DNR, responded to the situation. Members of the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team also responded with their Armored Response Vehicle.
Sheriff Richie says officers evacuated the Viking Motel, as well as Cameron residents within a set perimeter. Several businesses were also closed during the incident, including The Cameron House, the BP Amoco gas station, the Cameron Laundromat and Cameron Car Corner.
The Barron County Incident Command Vehicle responded and set up an incident command post at the Cameron Middle School.
After eight hours of unsuccessful negotiations with Moses, Sheriff Richie says officers devised a tactical plan and, with the help of distraction devices, made entry into the hotel room.
That's when Sheriff Richie says Moses was taken into custody. Officers found a loaded 30-06 rifle in the room.
Sheriff Richie says fortunately, no one was hurt during the extremely high risk situation.
