The sixth annual Water Street Mile is taking place Saturday, and organizers are hoping the proceeds from this year's race will top the $12,000 raised for the L.E. Phillips Senior Center last year.

The center's mission is to provide recreational, educational and social events for Eau Claire county residents 55 and older. The race is the largest fundraiser for the nonprofit center, which currently has more than 1300 members, a 225 percent increase in membership since 2001.

"That growth is reflected in the activities we have. It's reflected in the community in support we receive and it's reflected in the well seniors the are back out in the community contributing in other ways," says center director Laura Hookom.

Registration begins Saturday morning at the fine arts center at 7 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m.
