Crosses were planted on Monday to honor some La Crosse workers who have died on the job.

Every April 28th, workers gather at Green Island Park to remember their friends. Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Terry Hicks says the union members place small crosses in the ground with the name of every worker who never made it home as a way to remember their co-workers. Hicks says it's a day that hits close to home.

"It's become to emotional for me so I have chosen to not read names anymore," says Hicks.

Hicks says more than 60 people in western Wisconsin have been killed on the job since 1929.
