Three Rivers Bus Service has served students in La Crosse for years. But just months after it announced it would no longer transport kids for the district, the company now says it's going out of business.
For the past five years, students at La Crosse public schools have heard the sound of Three Rivers buses. But owners announced on Wednesday the company will be closing its doors in June.
"The school district officials could not come to an agreement that would keep us in business," says Three Rivers manager Tom Tupper.
Tupper says the company had to make the decision because its largest contract was with the La Crosse school district. And without that money, the company can no longer operate successfully.
"I believe it's disappointing to a lot of my employees, my staff, but the mood right now is pretty up beat."
Tupper says about 100 people will lose their jobs because of the decision to close Three Rivers Bus Company. But he says most will likely end up driving buses for the new transportation provider, First Student Bus Company out of Cincinnati, Ohio.
"I believe that the district will have a good turnover as far as employees going over to First Student."
The school district said the change had to happen because First Student offered a lower bid. Tupper says he isn't sure what's next but he is keeping a positive attitude.
"I have no hard feelings whatsoever. I think sometimes change can be a blessing."
Three Rivers Bus Service opened in 2003.
