A La Crosse jury handed down a not guilty verdict for the man accused of smuggling 1,000 pounds of marijuana across the U.S. in a semi.

Last November, Marco Corzo was arrested by state troopers after 1,000 pounds of marijuana was found in the back of the semi he was driving. On Thursday, Corzo was set free after a jury found him not guilty.

"After something like this, it's more relief then happiness," said Corzo’s attorney Dan Ryan.

La Crosse County Assistant District Attorney Brian Barton says the verdict was disappointing.

"I was a little disappointed in the verdict. You're always disappointed when something doesn't go your way," he says.

Barton says he still believes there was enough evidence to convict Corzo of felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, but says he respects the jury's decision.

"I totally respect what the jury came back with. They felt that the state was not able to prove each element and I'm satisfied with that."

Ryan says he disagrees and says he never thought there was enough evidence for prosecutors to get a conviction.

"There wasn't a lot of evidence connecting Mr. Corzo to the marijuana that was in the back of the truck."

With the trial over, Ryan says he and his client are relieved.

"I don't know that I would say it's a surprise... I knew this was a possibility but I also knew that there was a chance he'd be convicted."

Gurmit Singh, the other man in the truck who was arrested, will go to trial on drug charges at the end of July.

I don't know where I read this, but may I paraphrase... "How can you outlaw a plant? As if there were something feloniously wrong with nature..." I can't wait for the day when my tax dollars are not wasted putting innocent people through the wringer...
