Tasers Illegal for Private Citizens

In some cases, on a crime scene or during an arrest, officers will reach for a taser before reaching for a gun. The device stuns suspects with an electric current, making it easier for law enforcement to subdue combative people.

The stun gun is illegal for private citizens to own in Wisconsin, which, without proper training, chippewa falls police chief says is safer.

"There could be concern about tasers being used in the commission of crimes such as robberies, other offenses that could make a victim defenseless," says Chief Joe Coughlin. "It certainly would make it pretty hard to resist that or call for help."

Wisconsin is one of seven states that does not allow people to carry tasers, excluding law enforcement, armed service personnel, corrections officers and those who make and sell the tasers to those people.
