MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minneapolis police say a suspect is dead after a shootout that injured two officers.

The incident erupted after the man fled a Friday afternoon traffic stop on the city's south side. The two officers were in stable condition in a nearby hospital.

Police said earlier that the shootout happened when the suspect was cornered in a home he had broken into.

Police Chief Janee Harteau called it a tragic situation.

Police gave the news via the department Twitter account Friday afternoon about an hour after the incident on the city's south side.

Spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington told The Associated Press that a suspect was also shot. She said she didn't know his condition or age.

Barrington says the officers stopped the vehicle about 3:30 p.m. and the suspect fled and broke into a house. The homeowner called police, and a shootout ensued.

The homeowner, Jim Bickal, told Minnesota Public Radio that he saw one of the wounded officers. Bickal says an investigator at the scene told him the suspect was dead.

City Councilman Gary Schiff says the officers were shot Friday afternoon in south Minneapolis. Schiff represents that part of the city.

Schiff said 3rd District Inspector Mike Sullivan informed him of the shootings. Sullivan told the council he had no information on their condition.

Police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington said the officers were being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. She said she had no information on their conditions.

Barrington says the officers had pulled over a vehicle and the person in it fled. Barrington says the suspect, a male, broke into a home. Officers were called by the homeowner and a shootout resulted. Barrington says the suspect was shot. She didn't know his condition.
