Wisconsin's Automatic Gas Tax Increase Target Of Senate Debate

The state Senate is expected to consider a measure next week that would end the automatic annual increase in the gas tax.

Under current laws, the gas tax is set to rise on April first by almost one cent per gallon.

The annual adjustments were put in place 20 years ago to account for inflation. The tax is used primarily to fund roads and other transportation projects.

The bill offered by Senator Tom Reynolds would end the tax increase after the April first increase. If it passes, the measure would create a five-point-one million dollar shortfall in the transportation budget.

Governor Doyle's former administration secretary Marc Marotta says the move could slow road projects around the state and calls the move a short-term fix to a long-term problem.
