The up-front cost of dental care can be a deterrent for many people, but dentists across the country are volunteering time to teach children about how early prevention can pay off.
As part of Give Kids a Smile Day, more than 120 children received preventative treatments at the dental clinic of the Chippewa Valley Technical College. Ten dentists volunteered their time, along with dental hygiene and assisting students from CVTC to teach kids the importance of dental health.
"If we can catch kids on the front end and do sealants and fluoride varnishes and home care and talk to their parents about home care and hopefully (it will) plant the seed that they should take care of their mouth," says Pam Entorf, a CVTC dental hygiene instructor.
The Wisconsin Dental Association estimates more than $515,000 in treatments will be given to children around the state Friday.
