Friends and family of an Eau Claire High School student killed in a traffic crash over the weekend are trying to deal with the loss.

18-year-old Willow Stoeklen was a passenger in a car that crashed in Carson Park Saturday night. She died early Sunday morning.

Everyone who we spoke to says they're devastated to lose such a remarkably creative young woman.

"Last night I got a call from my boyfriend and he's like what's Willow's last name? And I was like ‘It's Stoeklen,’ and he was like ‘there's some things you need to look into,’” recalls Kathy Clark.

She never expected to lose the young woman who had become like a sister to her.

"I called her mom and she was like yep, that was Willow," says Clark.

Clark met Willow Stoeklen through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program in 2005. Since then, the two have been inseparable.

"During the winter, we'd get lots of coffee but during the summer she was always outside...in the trees, up the trees, in the water… any chance to get outside,” remembers Clark. “If there was any kind of animal around, or kids, she was a happy girl."

Clark says the pair bonded over their love of nature and art. One of her most recent memories was willow getting into water fights at Clark's family Fourth of July get-together.

“She had a blast, and everyone commented on her, that she was such a vivid girl, just full of life,” says Clark. “She was out there. That was definitely her.”

"What I admire most about her was the fact that she was an absolute individual," says Clark.

A unique individual, whose full and vibrant life was tragically cut short.

"It's unexpected. It's like I'm not going to see her next week. Who am I going to hang out with and walk barefoot through the park with?” wonders Clark. “It's going to take some time to adjust, definitely."

Willow Stoeklen would have finished up her senior year of high school in the fall.

Her family was too distraught to talk on camera, but say she was always smiling and free-spirited.

There's no word yet on any plans for a memorial service.

Story from Sunday, July 20, 2008

A car crashes into a tree, killing a young Eau Claire woman.
Saturday night, shortly before 10:30 p.m., police responded to a car crash.

The eighteen-year-old driver, Jacob Schlewitz, lost control of his Pontiac.

The car skidded off the road, and the passenger side hit a large tree.

Eighteen-year-old Willow Stoeklen was riding in that passenger seat.

She was taken to the hospital, but died just before five Sunday morning from her injuries.

Schlewitz only had minor injuries.

The Eau Claire Police are still investigating the crash.

They say alcohol is not a factor.

There wasn't enough room to say this in my first comment but I wanted to say that we hold no ill feelings toward Jake Schlewitz for the accident that took Willow from us. As her mother I am grateful that, if it was her time to go home that God granted us all mercy in knowing that she was in the company of a friend when the accident happened. With the world that we live in I know that it could have been so much worse. God bless you Jake and grant you His perfect peace.

I am Willow's mother and I'd like to start off by thanking everyone for their kindness and generosity during our time of greatest sorrow. I'd like to tell you about this most wonderful gift that God blessed me with eighteen years ago. Her name is Willow Amber and she will always be my one true hero. Willow had such a loving spirit and an inner light that shone on everyone equally...young, old, rich, poor...none of that mattered to her. She loved them all. I am very happy for those of you who were fortunate enough to have met or known her and feel saddened beyond expression for those of you who never got that chance. I always knew what a special gift God had given to me in Willow but, until her death, I never truly realized what a gift she was to everyone who's ever met her. She was a true child of God who has gone home to Jesus, Who's light has always shone so brigthtly within her. I love and miss you Willow...you will always be the light in my darkness.

I am very saddened by this tragedy. My heart goes out to her mother Tammy and her family. Willow was a very creative girl who always had an abundance of energy and enthusiasm. She was also a great animal lover. I had a kitten that needed a home but he had some health problems, Willow traded her rats to have him. I appreciated that very much. My deepest condolences.

Kathy Clark is one of my best friends. Through Kathy I met Willow on the 4th of July. What a wonderful spirit and soul she had and I'm sure continues on. I'd been talking about her since I met her and saying how happy I was to finally meet her. She has meant so much to Kathy over the last three years and I could see why. My thought and prayers go to her family. As a parent myself I can only begin to imagine their pain. Even though I only met her that one day I was touched by what an amazing young woman she was.

I didn't know Willow outside of school but in school me, her, and a few others used to hang out during lunch, and in the mornings when she forcefully woke me up. She was always in a happy mood in the time I knew her. Hapy and playful mood I... I know she will be greatly missed by everyone. I can't even begin to descride what all of us are feeling, my prayers to everyone who knew her.

I'm a student at the university and I volunteered with 3-5 Club where I tutored Willow and other students. Willow had this "glow" and it was always so inviting and creative. I admired her because she was so free-spirited and unique. She didn't seem to care what others thought. Although I didn't know Willow that well, she taught me a lot more than I taught her with our time spent together. I will surely miss her, and my prayers go out to her family and friends.

When saw the accident and called 911, we were hoping that she would be ok .... our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the family and friend.

Sad Sad story indeed...I feel awful for both families...and for Jacob too. I'm sure this was not at all his intentions-- (for anything bad to happen). At 18 everyone thinks their invincible. We are all soooo NOT! Please, people s l o w down...

As Jacob's aunt, I can assure you that our family was devastated by this crash and the loss of such a lovely young woman. I met Willow at a recent graduation party and those two were such good friends. Our hearts and prayers go out to Willow's family and friends. None of this makes any sense. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I did not know Willow, but my sympathy goes out to the family and friends. Such a sad story, and she had her whole life ahead of her. Life just doesn't seem fair sometimes. We will keep you in our prayers, and pray God will give you the strenght to get though this tragic accident.
