The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Brett Favre to the New York Jets. Terms of the trade are not available at this time. The two teams agreed to the trade Wednesday night.

Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy and Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson issued the following joint statement:

“Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state. It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible.

“We respect Brett’s decision that he could no longer remain here as a Packer. But there were certain things we were not willing to do because they were not in the best interest of the team. We were not going to release him nor trade him to a team within the division. When Brett ultimately decided that he still wanted to play football, but not in Green Bay, we told him that we would work to find the best solution for all parties involved. We wish Brett and his family well.

“We appreciate the tremendous passion shown by our fans. We, like them, always will see Brett Favre as a Green Bay Packer and our respect for him never will change. Moving forward, we are dedicated to delivering a successful 2008 season for all Packers fans.”

Favre leaves Green Bay as the NFL’s all-time leader in most major passing categories – touchdowns (442), yards (61,655), completions (5,377) and attempts (8,758) – and his 253-game starting streak intact. By playing 16 seasons in a Packers uniform (1992-2007), he matches Bart Starr (1956-71) for the longest tenure in team history among his 30 team records.

What a bunch of fairweather fan you are you can not even support the team that you claim that you love. You need to get over it already, Brett chose to move on and you should too. Glad to say I am not a fan of either Brett or the Pack.

How the Green Bay Packers organization treated Brett is wrong and not how grown men should do business. If Teddy boy is so certain Mr. Rogers is the man for the Green Bay neighborhood and is such a good idea, why should they be so concerned about where Brett played, If Mr. Rogers is the man, he's the man then regardless of where Brett plays. It was dirty dealing and it doesn't make me very proud right now to be a Packer fan. The political bumper sticker, "If you're not disgusted, then you're not paying attention!" certainly applies here.

I agree with Mike from Rice Lake. I'd like to add my disgust at all the anti-Brett comments how quickly some people forget all that he brought to Green Bay and what a positive icon he was for GB and Wisconsin. I'm joining the forces in Green Bay at 6:00 before Monday nights game. Their purpose: Trade Ted Thompson and Murphy. With their dirty way of handling this decision should cost them their jobs.Where's Ron Wolf and what's he doing these days? Maybe he'll come out of retirement!

Yeah! I'm completely behind this trade. Here's to a great start as a new team.

Hey Todd, you're a clown. I'll watch Favre, too, and will now be able to laugh at his silly interceptions, of which I am sure there will be many this year. He won't have half as good a year as last year. You can take that to the bank.

Yeah Bill, It's all Ted's fault....right you just keep believing that. Time to stop the hero worship, and realize Brett didn't want to come back here. He asked for his RELEASE, not to come back. Brett can't get over that he'snot the only Packer that makes decisions, and when it comes to playerrs/coaches, he has no say in the matter. Brett retired, and the team took him at his word and made plans for the season. Who is he to force anyones hand to change that? The world doesn't revolve around him, and he now knows that. Have fun with the pathetic O-line of the Jets, you're gonna watch alot of the game from your back, just like Pennigton did! If they couldn't protect a more mobile QB, how are they going to protect Brett??????

Good, let somebody else put up with the "Drama Queen".

Favre brought on the soap opera himself after stating his retirement. Go Rodgers!

Integrity obviously isn't his strong suit.

Hey Favre....GET OVER YOURSELF!

Posted by: Jon Location: Eau Claire, WI on Aug 7, 2008 at 10:20 AM
It will be difficult to see the Packers take the field without Favre but life goes on. Its too bad that his career ended in such a soap opera. I was a huge fan of Favre but unfortunately have lost a great deal of respect for him. He should have stayed retired and kept his legacy intact. At the end of the day we have no one to blame but ourselves for the choices we make in our lives!

My heart is saddened that what Brett Favre did for the Packers, they didn't go out of their way to give him the respect he deserves. He deserves to be treated like a Prince. He went all out for that team. I will now be a NY Jets Fan! Go Jets. Always a Favre Fan!

I really feel he has hurt himself but all the trouble he has caused. He could of rode out into the sunset and been our hero forever. Now he has the chance to get hurt and be injured for life. He says he can't find a hobby well I would like to try with all his money. I have lost so much respect for him. Poor Rodgers, he has to prove himself and is in the limelight of Brett Farve. Hopefully he can pull it off and if he doesnt well we will still support him.

Finally- I'm glad he is gone!

How much of this garbage from Ted Thompson and the Packer management gang are the Packer fans going to continue to take?..To loose a 3 time MVP and 17 year veteran over some crazy "going forward" path from the Packers is totally ridiculous. The only question Packer management should have considered was "Who gives us the best chance to win this year?"..There are no guarantees that even if Aaron Rodgers pans out that he will be healthy or even return next year..I have been a packer fan all my life and will not watch any packer games this year until we get some decent management back in place..

It was time for Brett to move on anyway! He was a great leader for the Packers for many years, but if your heart isn't in it, why stay? I still LOVE the Pack!

Posted by: sadness Location: eau claire on Aug 7, 2008 at 01:31 AM
they trade bret as the nfl all time leading in most major passing categories etc... and this is how the green bay packers organization treats him. Its going to be hard to even cheer for team that is so willing to take him or leave after all that he has done.

Posted by: Todd Location: Leesburg, Fl on Aug 6, 2008 at 11:54 PM
How dare you say you appreciate everything he has done for the Packers and the community?! You will always see him as a Packer?! If this were true you would not have slammed the door in his face or let him go! He is and always will be the greatest player to ever wear a Packer uniform. You remember that when facing a 0-16 season and watching Rodgers throw his 30th interception! You make me sick. Go Jets!

This sucks! I feel like Brett has died! I will honestly have a hard time watching the Packers! I can tell you I will watch Favre!
