Family members of 17-year-old Josh Gilbertson say doctors told them Monday his condition is getting worse, what the family describes as very critical.
Gilbertson was riding his bike with his cousin last week when he collided with an SUV at the intersection of Highway 93 and Hamilton Avenue.
Kevin Peterson, Josh’s dad, says things are not looking good, but he says the doctors are doing everything they can.
"There's a lot of damage that's been done, his lungs are starting to fail and his heart will soon follow. It's not very good for him at all, the chances for this are very, very poor,” he says.
Peterson says the medicine that's keeping Josh in a drug induced coma is hurting his lungs so doctors will stop giving Josh the medication Tuesday and see if that helps.
Peterson says Josh was out on a bike ride with his cousin when the crash happened.
The Eau Claire Police Department says Josh was not wearing a helmet.
Peterson has his own advice for both drivers and bikers.
"Look out for each other. I mean this could happen to anybody at any time. Bike riders wear your helmet. Also, be aware of where you're at and where you're going. Motorists, remember you're driving a deadly vehicle,” he says.
Peterson says the family is staying positive about the situation and he wants to thank everyone for their support.
Officer Jason Kaveny says the crash is still under investigation, partially because they are hoping to talk to Josh to find out exactly what happened, and they haven't been able to do that yet.
