Five teenage boys are arrested in a string of crimes over the past year and half. Police say those crimes range from graffiti to arson.
Investigators say the teens started a dumpster on fire at the Rice Lake High School and vandalized the baseball dugouts. They say the kids then started a plastic garbage bin on fire at a Roux Park and smashed a vending machine at the Rice Lake Municipal Pool. Now, five 16 and 17 year old boys are linked to 16 cases, some at businesses and a home.
"We really didn't have any active leads until the interviews that led to admissions," says Captain Mike Nelson with the Rice Lake Police Department.
Captain Nelson says someone called the department last Wednesday night to report a car driving erratically near the school. When officers pulled the car over, they found two of the teens with stolen property. Nelson says the investigation led them to the other three teens.
"Of course we always like bringing a resolution for the benefit of the victims. It appears these are five local boys who have no prior history that went on a 16 month long stretch of criminal activity," Nelson says.
The teens face charges of arson, burglary, theft, damage to property, trespassing and disorderly conduct. They were arrested and released. Captain Nelson says the case will be sent to the district attorney once the investigation into the crime spree is complete.
The Rice Lake Police Department is still trying to put a total price tag on the damage.
