Three Amish kids have been taken to a Madison hospital following a collision between their horse-drawn buggy and a motorcycle.

Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley didn't have details on the children's injuries but said they were "severe." The two boys are 12 and 7 years old, and the girl is 4 months old.

Sunday's crash left the 21-year-old motorcycle driver dead. Eight other people in the buggy suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening.

One of the two horses pulling the buggy had to be destroyed.

Deputies say the motorcyclist missed a curve and crossed the center line.

The sheriff says accidents between buggies and motor vehicles are becoming more frequent as the Amish population rises, but says the main factor is the hilly terrain that limits driver vision.

NO I AM NOT MISSING THE POINT. the law if you have ever read it says a motorized vehicle. NOT A HORSE AND BUGGY AND THAT WAS MY POINT.

Red, I think your missing my point, I'm not punishing the Amish but I think a 4 Mo. old would be better off in a protective child seat with 11 people in a buggy. 11 people in a small space is a lot. Eight other people in the buggy suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening. The 12 and 7 year old are "severe." as well as the 4 Mo old. Your children or grand children have to be in a protective child seat in your car. You have to obey the laws, right??? ITS THE LAW. 1 - under 1-Yr. to 20# in rear seat facing rear. In a child seat 2 - 1 Year. to less then 4 Years. 20# less then 40# in a child seat 3 - 4 Years. to 8 Years. 40# to 80# less then 57" tall booster seat 4 - 8 Years. or older 80# plus 57' tall or more in seat belts.

Also, Newil, who's fault would this be if the motorbike crashed into a bus full of kids or a minivan full of kids? Fact remains the motorcyclist lost control, it just so happens the buggy was there. Could've been anyone. Sadly this is just a horrible ACCIDENT on the part of the motorcycle driver according to the report, and my thoughts and prayers to ALL impacted by this tradegy.

If you have forgotten, Newil in Sheldon, horses drawn buggys were here long before our cars were, who's to say that our cars or motorcycles should even be on these roads. We have taken over the horse drawn buggy's turf, so to speak. We need to yield to these vehicles, as they have just as much if not MORE right to be there than we do. As far as seat belts, give me a break. How many seat belts did you see on "Little House on the Prairie"...? How often have you had to pick up your car's poop? Should they have to wear seat belts and use car seats, no, same reason. You chose to drive a motor vehicle, you are then required to follow the laws for such vehicle: seat belts. If people can't drive safely in motor vehicles, they should not be on the roads endangering those who do belong there. Driving a motor vehicle should be recognized as a privlige and respect should be givin to those whose roads we are fortunate to be allowed to USE. They were here first!

A 21 year old driving his motorcycle too fast and cannot control it. Hmmm , blame it on hilly terrain. Amish people have just as much right to the rd as anyone else and people need to SLOW down!!!

Just because the driver of the motorcycle did not have to wear a seatbelt, Does not mean the buggy was in the wrong. Why on gods green earth should the buggy have to have seatbelts, It is a none motorized vehicle! Why Should the Amish be punished for the very big mistake the driver of the motorcycle made. He should have slowed down. Lets not forget the people in the buggy were not the ones at fault here. I myself have never meet any Amish people but they i am sure keep there kids safer the some none amish.

I have driven trucks for years and every time i would meet a mother pulling a little red wagon I would try to get to the left as far as possible. If i was meeting someone and couldn't I would wonder what would happen if a rock would fly out of my tire and hit the kid in the face and how the mother would feel. Thats how windshields get busted. if Sooo thinks her children are safe and she is walking on the left facing traffic and the kid was in a protective child seat facing backwards the child would be less apt to get hurt. Maybe a bike helmet should be worn also. I still feel sorry for the children in this collision and think all parents should be held accountable for keeping their children safe on Wisconsin highways.

So you insist that all moving objects on the highways should have seatbelts if somebody is riding in them? If that is the case, do you think when I pull my children from my house down the highway to my parents in a little Red Rider wagon, they should have to wear seatbelts in their little wagon? I dont think so. Buggies nor Red Rider wagons are motorized. Something more worthwhile to change would be having seatbelts on buses, especially school buses. P.S. Im sure seatbelts in a buggy isn't a life saving measure, but it would make for an interesting study.

Maybe if they are going to drive buggies on Wisconsin highways they should all have seat belts and baby seats like we have to have in are cars. If I put 11 people in a car I would have to have 11 seat belts and seats. No one would be allowed to stand up. I fell sorry for the children in this collision and think the parents should be held accountable for the keeping there children safe on Wisconsin highways.
