A man accused of hanging his dog from its choke chain has been convicted of felony mistreatment of animals.

Thirty-five-year-old Eric Shattuck of Appleton pleaded no contest Thursday in Outagamie County Circuit Court.

The criminal complaint says Shattuck told a visitor on Sept. 26 he hung the dog after it refused to drink a fatal dose of antifreeze. The woman reported that the dog was still hanging in Shattuck's garage the next day. Police found the animal's body in a garbage bag in the garage.

Shattuck told the woman he killed the dog because he didn't want it anymore.

He faces up to 3 1/2 years of prison and extended supervision when he is sentenced Nov. 6.

As a side note this is another example of how imperative it is for us to neuter our pets. There are not enough decent homes for the animals and there are too many irresponsible people owning them.

James in Neillsville- does this really have anything to do with hunting? NO! Another cold person with a stupid comment

Posted by: unknown Location: EC on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:52 AM
this is such a sad sad story..people who cannot take care of animal should not have them! Not that hard, and to stan, how heartless could you be?

How cruel and callous can a human be??!!! This man does not deserve to breath our air! Unwanted pets can be surrendered to any number of shelters. He needs mental therapy AND a prison term.

What next, we going to send all that hunt to prison too?

Posted by: Nikki Location: Durand on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:12 AM
A pat on the back to the woman that reported him, I only wish that more people had the heart to report animal abuse. To Stan in boycivelle...Yeah and kids all will die one day to, should we not waste our money with giving a felony to someone who mis-treats a child?? How heartless!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 07:50 AM
To stan in boyceville: You're going to die someday too, so if you get strung up by your throat and deprived of oxygen, panicking and in pain every minute by some deranged sicko, maybe the DA won't bother convicting him because, "he would have died someday anyhow."

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Eau Claire on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:31 AM
This is completely sick and if a person is capable of this they are capable of just about anything. There is no excuse for this kind of behavior.

I think Stan from Boyceville is another irresponsible dog owner. Anyone who is that cold hearted probably abuse there pets also. Don't get them if you can't take care of them, it's really that simple

Posted by: Brem270 Location: Eau Claire on Sep 7, 2008 at 08:22 PM
If you dont want the dog take it to the dog pound. It doesnt even make sense to kill it. How heartless are you. If you had a child a didnt want it any more would you hang it. Use your brain before anyone does something so dumb. Maybe he should go to prison and realize he was pretty stupid and thats what put him there

To Stan from Boyceville - You are going to die someday too, does that mean we should hang you too?

Posted by: Red Location: Chippewa Falls on Sep 7, 2008 at 04:11 PM
Stan you show us morons even live in Boyceville, you belong in prison right with him 3 1/2 years aren't enough.

Posted by: BJ Location: Chippewa Falls on Sep 7, 2008 at 12:04 PM
This jerk should be hung and put in a garbage bag to see how he likes it! 3 1/2 years???? Thats it? Death penalty should be his punishment!

another irresponsible dog owner, sick

Posted by: sick Location: at the computer on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Eye for an eye, that's all I can say.

Posted by: Justice Location: Eau Claire on Sep 7, 2008 at 07:10 AM
Why should we waste taxpayer money on this idiot. Let the punishment fit the crime.

Posted by: stan Location: boyceville on Sep 7, 2008 at 04:43 AM
What's the differance, this dog would have died someday anyhow. What a waste of tax payers money to prosecute this man for a trumpted up felony charge.

Posted by: BK Location: NW WI on Sep 6, 2008 at 09:47 PM
I would like to see this guy treated the same way he treated his dog. There are other options for unwanted dogs. Makes me sick!

Posted by: CJ Location: EC on Sep 6, 2008 at 04:35 PM
I certainly hope he gets the maximum sentence of three and a half years. This isn't the first time this man has been cruel to an animal. Last year he was convicted of Failure to Quarantine (Not taking animal to Vet - 3 visits) You don't just wake up one day realizing you don't want your dog anymore and try to feed it a fatal dose of anti freeze then hang the poor dog because it is smart enough not to drink it! Credit is due to the woman that reported him!
