County leaders say vandals who are taking down dozens of road signs in rural Eau Claire County are forcing taxpayers to fork over $10,000 extra this spring.
>
A pile of broken signs and posts at the County Highway Department is made up of a few of the 100 the County Highway Commissioner says were torn down during the last three weeks.
>
"Sometimes we get calls from the Sheriff's Department in the middle of the night saying they found signs laying in a ditch so there could be some stuff during the day but I'd say 95 percent of it or more is at night," said Highway Commissioner Thomas Walther.
>
"We're going to rely on the citizens out there; people may know something about this," said Captain Ed Asselin of the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department. "We're hoping someone will come forward."

Most of the damage has been happening in the eastern part of the county. If you have information call 839-4972
