Drug manufacturers recommend children under the age of four don't take cough or cold medications.

Luther Midelfort's, Dr. Teri Stevenson, says studies have shown those medications don't help younger kids and aren't effective.

She adds they can also be dangerous and sometimes fatal if they overlap and cause an overdose.

Stevenson says the meds can also have side effects that make kids irritable, drowsy, or not able to sleep.

But, she says don't worry, there are some ways to give your kids some relief.

Dr. Teri Stevenson says, "Parents can help them by making sure that they're getting enough sleep and extra rest to recover. Also, making sure they're drinking plenty of extra fluids."

And if your child has a fever, Stevenson says it's still okay to give them regular Tylenol or ibuprofen.
