Matt Johnston spent Sunday morning preparing to realize his dream of scuba diving.

"I got hooked a couple years ago after seeing a dog show."

For most 29-year olds this may seem like a small thing, but Johnston has spent the last 22 years with muscular dystrophy and is the first person with this condition to attempt such a feat in the open water, making him quite the role model for people with similar diseases.

Johnston is not stopping after one go round. This is practice for an even bigger dive.

"I’m going to Key Largo later this summer."

He hopes to get in ten dives this summer. On Sunday, his mother and others watched as he went five to ten feet under, but his hope is to go deeper in Florida.

"My friends have been working on a ventilator system that would get me down 30 feet, which is deep enough for me."

Even with Sunday’s dip, Johnston’s already been deeper than anyone else with muscular dystrophy has.

"I always say you can do anything if you put your mind to it."

Life expectancy for people with muscular dystrophy is 30 years, one year away for Johnston, but don't look for him to switch gears after this summer.

"People ask me what my dream is after diving, and I say ‘What's wrong with diving?’”
