Wisconsin Researchers Challenge California Institute
Two sides try to work out stem cell patent issue

Researchers in Wisconsin are trying to keep their counterparts at a California institute honest as the scientists out west hope to pay out $3 billion in stem cell research grants.

The director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation says he doesn't want to get in the way of what's going on at the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. However, the University of Wisconsin owns two patents on embryonic cells and members of the Wisconsin foundation say they want a percentage of the related royalties.

Both sides say they're not planning lawsuits and they're in discussions.
