Bride-to-be Injured by Firework Shell the Night Before her Wedding

A 24-year-old woman who was injured by a stray firework shell the night before her wedding is back at home.

Sarah Zickert of Cascade, twenty miles west of Sheboygan, suffered third-degree burns on her hands and abdomen Friday night when the shell exploded in the middle of her pre-wedding party. She was to be married Saturday.

“It was a huge explosion,” Randy Boeldt of the Elkhart Lake Police said. “I saw it from shore. I really expected someone was going to be killed, so it was amazing that we didn't have more serious problems.”

The fireworks shell was part of a show staged on a barge in Elkhart Lake. At least one shell flew horizontally onto shore. J and M Displays of Iowa put on the show. In a statement, the company said it had worked closely with the local fire department beforehand to make sure safety standards were met or exceeded.

Police say the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Five others suffered minor injuries. The wedding has been postponed but not rescheduled.
