READ FULL PRESS RELEASE ISSUED SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
A mother of two young twin boys was found dead last night. Her family left to deal with the tragic discovery of 27-year-old Alisha Sidie's body. Her ex-husband is in now jail, facing charges including first degree murder.
"This is not the way we wanted to bring Alisha back to her family, but now the family can start with some closure,” says Sgt. Pat LaBarbera with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
Alisha Sidie's body was found several miles east of her Hatfield home in the town of Komensky. The sheriff says she was found outside the area where they had been searching.
Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera did not release any information on how, when, where, or why Alisha was murdered, but the sheriff did tell us that it was Doug Sidie who eventually led them to his ex-wife's body.
"Mr. Sidie will be charged with first degree intentional homicide," said Jackson Co. District Attorney Gerald Fox.
Doug Sidie is being held without bond in the Jackson County jail accused of murdering his ex-wife. His mug shot a very different picture than the family portrait Sidie held last Monday, along with his twin two-year-olds.
"Whatever has happened, whatever happened, we just want her to come home," Doug Sidie told WEAU 13 News.
Sheriff Waldera says Doug Sidie's story changed drastically Saturday after a follow-up interview with a key witness prompted investigators to re-interview the 39-year-old. In fact, the sheriff says he doesn't know if the original story is true at all. They don't know if there was an argument or if Alisha left on foot.
“We believe that Doug Sidie is responsible for the death of Alisha Sidie, as well as attempting to conceal her body and evidence of the crime," says Waldera.
The sheriff would not say exactly where Alisha Sidie's body was found, but he did say it was Doug Sidie who pointed investigators in the right direction. A search dog then found her body in a wooded, remote area just a couple miles from where searchers had combed the forest.
"There was additional evidence collected and Doug Sidie assisted with finding those items as well," Waldera says.
Investigators say they found some of that evidence, they won't say what, in a body of water east of Black River Falls. They found other evidence near Alisha Sidie's body. Investigators say a volunteer searcher also found a key piece of evidence, but they would not say if they found anything inside the Sidie home.
"I can't even count the hours they have invested in this case. The last thing we want to do is rush through the last ten percent of this and get something wrong," Fox says.
Fox says he expects it to be several days before he files formal charges. The sheriff says there are no other suspects in the case and no one else will be charged in connection to her death.
Investigators say the autopsy is complete, but they will not release that information at this point. Investigators say after hundreds of man hours, it's a relief that the search is over but an unfortunate ending to Alisha Sidie's story.
"She's a hometown gal, born and raised here. She's liked by a lot of folks and known by a lot more. You can see by the turnout of volunteers how much they cared about Alisha and wanted to help," says Sgt. LaBarbera.
“It’s a tragic case. We have several victims. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families involved,” says Sheriff Waldera.
Alisha and Doug Sidie have two-year-old twin boys. Social Services was helping with them Saturday night. The sheriff says both sides of the family are working with Social Services on custody issues Sunday.
We talked to Alisha Sidie's sister Saturday night; she says the family is in shock. After talking openly about the search all week, the family is now asking for privacy as they grieve.
We also talked to Doug Sidie's father on the phone Sunday night. He says he can't believe it. He tells us Doug was always a fun-loving, easy-going kid and he doesn't know what to think about the arrest.
SUNDAY PRESS CONFERENCE UPDATE AT 2:30 P.M.:
At a press conference today, detectives said a key witness in 27-year-old Alisha Sidie’s disappearance case cooperated with investigators, and that’s when they brought in Doug Sidie for another round of questioning.
Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera says Doug Sidie eventually told detectives where they could find Alisha’s body in the township of Komensky just a few miles from Hatfield.
Waldera says that investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI), found Alisha’s body in a wooded, remote area in the northeast part of Jackson County using a scent tracking K-9 dog from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Sidie’s body was found in an area that had not been searched before, however it was close to the area where dozens of officers and hundreds of volunteers searched all week.
Waldera did not say how, where or when Sidie was killed. He says earlier in the week a volunteer searcher found a key piece of evidence that police say helped them solve the case. A forensic autopsy is being performed at the UW-Madison Hospital this afternoon. A Jackson County press release says that autopsy is expected to be completed later today and a final cause of death determined. Investigators say they will not release the autopsy information Sunday night.
Investigators along with the aid of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Dive Team were able to locate specific items associated with this case in a body of water east of Black River Falls. Those items did help out in the investigation.
The Sheriff also said in the past there had been instances where police were called to the Sidie home but he did not give any further details. The sheriff also offered the department’s condolences to Alisha Sidie’s family and friends.
39-year-old Douglas Sidie was arrested on a count of First Degree Intentional Homicide – Domestic Related. Sidie is being held without bond. He remains in the Jackson County Jail until arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court. Tonight his father told WEAU 13 News that Doug was a fun loving, quiet kid and that he didn't know what to think about the arrest.
The District Attorney of Jackson County Gerald Fox says a criminal complaint will be filed in the next couple of days. He did say he planned on filing charges of first degree intentional homicide, concealing a corpse, and obstructing an officer.
Investigators say the Sidie children are in state custody, but that both sides of the family are working with the state in regards to who will take care of the twin boys.
