Holiday sales of energy efficient LED lights may be up this season as consumers seek to cut energy costs and celebrate in a green way.
LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, can be three times more expensive than traditional incandescent lights. But they use 90% less energy, produce less heat and last longer.
Blogger Adam Siegel says he's done the math and figures a string of LED lights saves enough energy to pay for itself in as little as a year.
Others may be figuring the same thing. Manufacturers and retailers report sales are surprisingly brisk even during an economic downturn.
MillerCoors LLC has made the switch its Milwaukee headquarters. Company spokesman Mike Jones says using LED lights in its 200,000-light display cut energy costs by 60%.
