MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A business group has gone to court trying to overturn the city of Milwaukee's new sick-leave ordinance.
Voters approved the ordinance in a referendum Nov. 4 with just under 70 percent support.
It requires any employer in the city to provide workers up to nine days of paid sick leave each year, except those with fewer than 10 workers who must provide up to five sick days a year.
The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce asked that Milwaukee County Circuit Court delay implementation of the ordinance until it rules on the lawsuit filed yesterday.
Among other things, the association claims the law exceeds the city's authority because it affects companies based in other cities, and only the state can establish such laws.
Backers of the ordinance are working with the city on implementing it.
