It happened just south of the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Niagara street just before 3:00 Sunday morning.
Officers say the 21-year old man was riding in a car going south on Fifth that collided with an oncoming pickup truck.
At least three others were injured and taken to the hospital.
Family and friends of the victim who lost his life gathered at the scene of the crash for a vigil Sunday night.
They held candles, prayed, and put up a memorial along Fifth Avenue.
"He was like my son as well as my brother and I never ever imagined having life without him," said one woman at the vigil.
"I'll miss everything about him."
Eau Claire Police have yet to release the man's name.
