UW-Eau Claire is cancelling its summer commencement ceremony.

The ceremony had been scheduled for Saturday, August 1, but now students will be given the option to participate in the university's commencement ceremony in May or December.

Students who can't make it to those events will receive their diplomas in the mail.

The school's Commencement Coordinator says it's because of the cost of the ceremony and the lack of participation.

The more than 100 students were set to graduate this summer say they'll have to make other arrangements.

"My family want to see me walk, so they'll have to wait until December. I will maybe get my diploma in August, and then just come back in December to graduate,” says Business Student Julia Kramer.

Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich says fewer than 50% of the students taking summer classes this summer would be eligible to graduate in August.

"We've been attempting to bend over backwards over the years to say yes to everybody, and to accommodate every need, and we're simply not going to be able to do that, says Levin-Stankevich.
