For brothers and Olympic wrestling champions Ben and John Peterson, recognition of their gold medals three decades ago comes as a huge surprise.

"I thought it was a sign for the cheese factory!" says John, shocked at the gargantuan road-side sign erected in his and his brother’s honors.

But instead, their tiny hometown of Comstock, Wisconsin secretly organized to have this permanent sign put up on Highway 63.

"They honored us great when we came back in ‘72 and then again in ‘76 they had a special parade for us, and I never felt cheated by Comstock one bit ever and this is just, this is unbelievable," says John.

While both brothers won gold—First Ben in 1972 and then John in 1976, they say they never dreamed much farther than the family farm.

"I never had that dream. I don't even think I knew what the Olympics were until high school," says John.

"I guess I was 12 when I first saw the Olympics but I don't know that I ever put a connection that wrestling or I would be in a sport that would be in it," says Ben.

Those who have trained with the Peterson brothers say their small-town roots have helped them persevere in the sport.

"It can happen anywhere and it's proven right here in Comstock, Wisconsin!" says Dan Gable, former teammate of the Peterson brothers and fellow Olympic Wrestling Gold Medalist.

The Petersons say lessons they learned in this small farming community are what taught them to succeed on the world stage.

"You do your best, you do your best all the time, and you do it for a long time. And then you'll find out how far that god-given ability will bring you," says Ben.

And it's brought Ben and John so far, but it's also brought them right back, to where it all started.
