MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Madison's outdoor winter festival Polar Jam has been canceled due to conflicting city ordinances and warm weather.
>
So says festival organizer Keith Peterson.
>
The Polar Jam was supposed to take place the weekend of January 13.
>
Madison's fire code does not allow open flames or heating cooking equipment in or within 20 feet of a tent.
>
But the city's health code requires overhead protection for food cooked and served outdoors.
>
The conflicting codes have the potential to impact other major city events.
>
But alderman Mike Verveer says the city hasn't always enforced the ordinances.
>
Peterson says he's been talking with city officials to resolve the conflict to avoid the problem for future events.
>
Verveer agrees that the city needs to find a solution.
>
The warm weather also played a part in Polar Jam's demise this year.
>
Peterson says they had hoped to shoot fireworks off the frozen lake and have ice sculptures.
>
But Madison lakes haven't frozen yet.
