The Dunn County sheriff announced the names of seven people arrested in a drug and burglary ring which stretches from Menomonie to Minneapolis.

Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith says undercover deputies bought meth. Then they got a search warrant and went into a home in the Town of Dunn. There, they found more drugs and lots of stolen property. Smith says charges include possession of meth and marijuana, delivering meth, running a drug house, bail jumping, and possession of stolen property.

Deputies seized thousands of dollars of stolen goods, including riding lawn mowers, ATV's, a snowmobile, and many power tools. They needed two flatbed trailers to bring back all of the stolen property.

The case led investigators to the meth dealer in Minneapolis. Police found one pound of meth there, worth over $90,000 on the street. Smith says he feels sorry for the meth users because the drug is so powerful.

“Pretty soon their whole world just kind of crumbles apart so they don't have a job,” Smith says. “They have no means of buying methamphetamine, paying for it, so then they turn to other crimes such as burglaries and thefts from all over the area.”

When drug users run out of money to buy more meth, they steal what they can and trade with their dealer to get more. In this case, Smith says the dealer put together a stolen-goods want list of sorts and told his users to steal what was on the list for him, and then he would give them drugs as payment.

“The person who is selling the methamphetamine to the users actually tells 'em what he's interested in,” Smith says. “’I'm interested in a trailer. I'm interested in a lawn tractor,’ or something like that and then they'll go out and they'll actually steal something that will fit the order of the supplier.”

Smith says jailing meth addicts often gives them the best chance to recover because it forces them to get off the drug and detoxify.
