UW-Stout has suspended one of its fraternities, after police cited 133 underage drinkers at the group’s house.

It happened at UW-Stout’s Sigma Tau Fraternity located on 17th Avenue in Menomonie. Director of Communications, Doug Mell, says the university is not taking the bust lightly.

"We've decided we're going to take a very proactive approach,” Mell said.

Mell says UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorenson has suspended the fraternity from the university for 4 years. We stopped by the house on Friday, but none of the fraternity's members were willing to comment.

According to Mell, the university is working to help prevent underage drinking, and says Thursday night’s bust sends a strong message to students.

“That if you come to Stout, you go to parties, the police may show up.”

UW-Stout student, Noey Falde, says she thinks the university’s approach is working.

"In the last 4 or 5 years, I think it has gotten a lot better, but it's still a problem,” Falde said.

And while Mell says this bust was a big one, it shouldn’t reflect poorly on the rest of the student body.

"We have 8,400 students at UW-Stout and a great majority of them get up in the morning, they go to class, they get a great education at UW-Stout, they graduate from here, they get a great job."

An anonymous party-goer told us the fraternity members were, at one point, trying to kick people out of the party. She says Sigma Tau Gamma “does not deserve this.”
