MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Local winter warriors were freezing for a reason Saturday in Menomonie and became below zero heroes.

The 5th annual Polar Plunge in Menomonie was all in support of Special Olympics athletes.

More than 250 plungers leaped into the icy waters of Tainter Lake , raising a record amount of $54,000. Compare that to last year's $32,000.

Organizer Karen Kraus said money raised locally will stay locally, helping Special Olympics compete year round. She said this year’s event did not disappoint as it raised a record amount in Menomonie.

WEAU’s own Bob Gallaher helped emcee the event and he ended up plunging for the first time in his life after the crowd raised $350 in about a half-hour. And members of the Menomonie Thunderhawks football team were very happy to give Bob a shove.
