Proposed Wisconsin Deer Hunting Change

Wisconsin wildlife managers want to put much of the state under a special deer management zone.

The plan would expand the area in which hunters would be required to kill an antler-less deer before earning a buck tag.

It would also add Zone "T" hunts in time for the next hunting season in the interest of reducing herd size. The idea behind the special deer management zones is to either help eradicate chronic wasting disease or encourage hunters to kill more antler-less deer and also hunt in extended seasons.

However, the Wisconsin Deer Hunters Coalition said the plan would frustrate many hunters and may drive them to other areas. The plan goes before the Natural Resources Board later this month, and if approved would go into effect in August of this year.
