The Wisconsin Constitution would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman and prohibit civil unions under an amendment, which the state Senate approved early Friday.

The Senate approved the measure 20 to 13, following the Assembly's approval of the bill 68 to 27 last wee. If lawmakers approve the bill again after they convene the next two-year session in January, the amendment could be put to the voters for final approval on the April 2005 ballot.

Supporters put forth the amendment as their answer to the debate over gay marriage that has raged across the country.
