The Wisconsin State Natural Resources Board has approved removing the Grey Wolf from Wisconsin's list of threatened species. However, the wolf remains on the federal government's threatened species list, and the board's action is subject to legislative review.
A year ago the Grey Wolf was moved from the state's endangered species list to the threatened level, which made it legal for government workers to kill the wolves.
The DNR's most recent census shows there are 335 Grey Wolves mostly in northern Wisconsin. The count more than 20 years ago was only 25.
Should the board's change in the status of wolf be approved by the legislature, landowners, for example, could shoot them is they can prove the wolves were preying on livestock.
