Teacher Salaries Drop Below Average

A new study says Wisconsin teacher salaries dropped 7.5-percent below the national average in 2002, but their overall compensation package ranks 16th in the country.

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance found total compensation in Wisconsin averaged $53,755 a year, if it is taken to include benefits such as health care. That's about $1,500 more than the national average.

The average salary was below the national average at $41,056. In 1993, Wisconsin teacher salaries were about four-percent above the national norm. Mike McNett is director of collective bargaining and research for the Wisconsin Education Association Council.

He says teachers should be making more than the national average considering the quality of Wisconsin schools.
