For some of you, Memorial Day weekend is a time to bond with nature.
>
Outdoor enthusiast can pick between two different campgrounds in Eau Claire County, Harstad Park and Coon Fork Park, both near Augusta.
>
But if you think it’s too late to claim a spot for your tent at one of these sites, think again.
>
"I think a lot of people don't realize that we do have still a lot of sites on a first-come, first-serve basis,” Eau Claire County Parks & Forest Supervisor, Mike Torud said.
>
Torud says there are still over 30 non-reservable camp sites available at Coon Fork and 28 at Harstad.
>
He says chances are, most of those will be filled this Memorial Day weekend, by folks who live right here in western Wisconsin.
>
"I expect that there's going to be a lot of locals,” Torud said. “With the price of fuel and everything."
>
"A lot of them are just from the area,” Coon Fork Park Attendant, Ryan Weber said. “Get a few from La Crosse every once in awhile."
>
Weber says once in awhile, he’ll see some out of state campers, but it’s not common.
>
And while high gas prices may be keeping some out-of-state campers away from county campgrounds, Torud says it may also be keeping more of you close to home.
>
“I think a lot of these people are going to eventually decide that, you know, maybe we should take that vacation a little closer and take advantage of the local opportunities and recreational facilities we have,” Torud said.
>
That is, if the weather cooperates with your plans!
