People here in Luck say they're shocked to hear of a fatal stabbing over the thanksgiving weekend.
"I thought, 'Oh, that's pretty close to home,' because I live right over there in town," says one woman.
"I don't like Luck being put on the map for a murder," says Millie Locke.
Folks say crimes don't often happen in the area.
"That's why people move away from bigger cities to small towns like this," says one man.
"It does happen in small towns, too," says Locke.
Polk County Sheriff Timothy Moore says deputies arrested Wayne Rouillard on homicide charges.
He says Roulliard got in an argument with his friend, Stephen Dahlstrom, Saturday night. Dahlstrom was an American citizen who lived in Bogota, Columbia with his wife, a Columbian native.
"They've known each other for at least 15 years from what we can tell at this point," says Moore, of the friendship between Rouillard and Dahlstrom.
The sheriff says he was visiting Rouillard for the holiday.
"We received a call from a third party who said Rouillard had called him and said he needed to come to the residence, there had been and fight and that Dahlstrom had been stabbed,” says the sheriff.
Even though Moore says this is an isolated incident, some in town say they still feel uneasy.
"Yes, it does,” says Locke, when asked if she feels unsafe now. “I'm a walker and I walk many miles every day, and I walk now looking over my shoulder.”
But others say crime of any kind barely ever happens in Luck. They say they're sad this happened, but they're not afraid.
“No, not at all,” says one woman. “It's very rare."
Sheriff Moore says the autopsy on the victim Stephen Dahlstrom is under way at the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office in Anoka, MN.
.
The sheriff says the district attorney is reviewing the case, and could file charges by the end of the week.
Original story from Sunday:
A 61-year-old man from Columbia was stabbed and killed Saturday night in Polk County.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Department says they responded to a stabbing at 895 250th Avenue in Bone Lake Township in rural Luck.
Deputies found 61-year-old Stephen Dahlstrom of Bogota, Columbia dead in the garage. The department says they found he had suffered severe blunt force trauma and at least one fatal stab wound.
"It was very apparent he was deceased from his injuries. He had suffered a stab wound to the chest the knife was still present in his chest and there was a considerable amount of blunt force trauma around his head area," says Sheriff Timothy Moore.
Sixty-two-year-old Wayne Rouillard is the only person who lives at that address; he was first taken to the Amery hospital and then taken into custody and booked on a homicide charge at the Polk County Jail.
"We received a call from a third party, Rouillard called somebody and asked them to come over to the residence. He stated there had been a fight and said Steve was stabbed," says Sheriff Moore.
Moore says it appears Rouillard and Dahlstrom were friends and had known each other for several years before Saturday nights stabbing. The department says the two met when Dahlstrom was living in the Edina, MN area.
The Sheriff did say alcohol was present but is not sure if it was a factor yet. He says Rouillard did give an initial statement but has since said he will not talk with out a lawyer.
On Monday an autopsy will be performed at the Midwest Medical Examiners Office in Anoka, MN to determine the official cause of death.
The incident remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Medical Examiners Office.
