Minimum Wage

The minimum wage for Wisconsin workers could be on the rise later this year.

Gov. Doyle has proposed an increase, and his Minimum Wage Advisory Council talked about the issue Wednesday in Eau Claire.

The council, which was formed by Doyle and the Department of Workforce Development, wants to increase the state's minimum wage from $5.15/hour to $5.70/hour as soon as Oct. 1.

The wage could then got to $6.50 an hour after October first of next year.

The council will hold five meetings through the state this week.

Republican lawmakers and business leaders in general oppose the wage increase.
