Many World War II veterans will return to the place they were sent with orders to save the world some 60 years ago.
On June 29 they'll travel through France and Germany. It will also mark the first time a local man sets foot in Europe since the war ended.
Willard Burgmeier hasn't been able to afford the trip all this time, but he's also been suffering the effects of battle. He's had frequent headaches, shrapnel in his hands, and pain in his feet since he came home in the 1950's.
"I expect it to be different in some respects," Burgmeier said. "I know in 60 years, there's bound to be quite a change."
The Eau Claire Kiwanis raised most of the funds for Burgmeier's trip, and donated the rest.
