An indictment filed in federal court in New York shows a former navy lieutenant from Chippewa County got equipment when he served as a supply officer.

David Carmel of Gilman is charged with stealing and selling military weapons equipment.

USS shrike is stationed in Texas where Carmel had access to supply inventories belonging to U.S. Armed Forces world wide.

According to the indictment, Carmel used his status of supply officer and lieutenant to buy hundreds of laser-aming devices and machine gun barrels and parts even though it had no use for the equipment.

Carmel is accused of selling some of the equipment to an undercover agent last year.

He faces up to 30 years in prison.
