A task force studying how Wisconsin pays for public schools is recommending increasing the state sales tax, as well as eliminating the ceiling on teacher salaries.

The 29-member group, who was appointed by the governor, urges increasing the sales by one percent so school districts can lower their property tax levies. The current Wisconsin sales tax is five percent. But in many counties, including Eau Claire county, there is an additional one-half percent on top the state sales tax. The group also recommends lifting exemptions on certain items from the sales tax.

The group also recommends eliminating the QEO, or qualified economic offer, which allows school districts to avoid aribitration if districts offer teachers a salary and benefit package increase totaling 3.8 percent a year.

All recommendations will be released at the end of this month.
